Do you know that a polished concrete is three times
more durable than an unpolished concrete and economically better than most
other floors.it does not require waxing or coatings and it gives out a glossy
look after a high degree of finishing. It is ultimately becoming the
most sought after no-wax flooring materials due to the new methods and process
involved in the polishing of the concrete. It finds it most usefulness in
offices, ware houses, shops, retail
outlets due to it more appealing and attractive surface as well as its ease in maintaining.
A polished concrete is any concrete surface that results from the grinding
of concrete with a chemical densities and finer grinding tools. It involves chemical
grinding of concrete to about 800 grit levels and above to give a good polish.
Other enhancement and beautification feature are usually added to make it more attractive. They include stains, dyes, scoring
and other designs
BENEFITS
There are a lot of reasons why people go for polished concrete
rather than other conventional floor types but basically, it all depends on the
use, the nature of the environment, climatic factors, financial capacity, etc.
Polished concrete provide a durable,
strong and hard surface because concrete is a hard material which is a mixture
of sand, gravel, cement and water in the right proportion. Considering the
nature of the material, it tends to give
it a very strong surface that can
withstand forces and avoids cracks thereby giving it a long life –span. A properly maintained polished concrete
can last for over 30 years. It also requires
less maintenance and very easy to clean. If,
for example, your work is such that you are always very busy, the issue of cleaning and maintaining the
floors is reduced as it requires less attention as compared to most other floor
types. Cleaning of ground floors is very
easy and requires just soap and water with less force to get it cleaned. It’s
also time-saving during cleaning and maintaining when compared to other floor types.
Another key feature is that it doesn’t harbor the problem of glueing after a period of time and doesn’t dent
like the timber floor when hit a hard material. Its
high coefficient of friction makes it non-slipping and can reduce dust mites
and allergen problems and also repels mold growth.
Evidence show
that its highly reflective surfaces reduces the need for artificial lighting
and improve normal natural lighting. It develops a rugged patina and
provides a good thermal condition for
radiant floor heating.

DISADVANTAGES
As the saying goes, anything that has the advantage also does
have disadvantages.The disadvantages are
not much as they can be easy manipulated to have a very minimal effect. It’s
usually not comfortable to stand on it
for long stretches and could also be very cold
without radiant heating of the floor. Other problems include noise
reverberations and if incase quality was compromised during production;
it might not reach it proposed useful life.
Types of
polished concrete
There are
many types of polished concrete depending on the need or desire of the
individuals involved. They include:
Polish finish: it is the basic form of polishing
concrete .it involves a one or two steps grinding process in which only a bit
of the surface paste is removed with much focus on the polishing and designing
of the surface with less or without aggregate exposure.
Small
aggregate grinding: it involves the form in which the final texture is very small and only small amount of aggregate
is exposed throughout the surface and it gives an intrinsic design.
Large aggregate
exposure: this is one of the most expensive types of polish finish as it
requires high level of diamond grinding and it is usually about 3 to 4 times
more than the average grinding process to
expose the medium to large aggregate before the initial commencement of the
polishing.
Concrete
polishing can be done on new floors, retrofit or existing floors. it is also a
means of refining and upgrading a concrete
surface. The process of concrete polishing is done with the use of a concrete grinder to reduce a concrete surface done to the desired degree of shine and smoothness.
Polishing of concrete requires less work and labor resulting to lower cost.
It’s noteworthy to say that a high standard polish requires a high degree finish.
Retrofit floor is floors gotten from either cutting an existing floor slab or
addition of a topping slab with a minimum depth of 50mm to the top of the
existing slab.
Finally, a
polished concrete could be said to be a very nice investment if well produced
and maintained. The quality of the materials are used, the finishing methods and
the polishing process are also some basic
factors that help determine the quality
of the polished concrete.
